Description
County Bridge is a road bridge that spans the River Calder. The original stone bridge was built in 1517, with widenings occurring in 1632 and again in 1875. It is constructed of coursed squared stone and cast iron. The stone section features three shallow segmental arches supported by piers with triangular-section cutwaters, some of which have been rebuilt. These arches are now set back beneath the 1875 superstructure, which widened the bridge deck. This superstructure is made up of lattice girders that extend between the stone cutwaters on the eastern side and are supported by round iron piers on the western side. The bridge is adorned with cast iron balustrades that consist of pierced panels, with the piercings being regularly and closely spaced, featuring rounded tops and bases. The balustrades also include panelled end posts with finials.
