Description
The Bull on the Bridge is a hotel dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of ashlar and has a slate roof, with three storeys above a basement. The building has a three-bay frontage, plus an additional corner bay on the left (south) side. The basement is rusticated and contains paired sash windows. The upper floors have moulded cill bands. A moulded cornice runs along the eaves, supporting a blocking course above. Brick end stacks are visible on the roof.
The central bay projects forward and features an entrance reached by external steps with twisted iron balusters. The entrance door is a four-panel design, set beneath a fanlight, and is enclosed within an arched, quoined architrave with imposts and a bulls-head keystone, flanked by Tuscan pilasters supporting an entablature with a dentil cornice. A sash window is positioned above the door, at first-floor level, within an architrave topped by a triangular pediment supported by consoles. Above this is a pair of hood-moulded round-arched sashes, with the cill resting on small consoles. Other bays contain paired sashes, with cills that project beyond the cill bands, supported by block corbels. The corner bay has shouldered-arched basement windows. A ground-floor canted bay window features a cornice and blocking course. A sash window with a console cornice is found on the first floor, and the second floor has paired round-arched sashes with hoodmoulds.
The building is included on the list for its group value.
