Description
The war memorial, built in 1923 and sculpted by H Percy Jackson, is made of Yorkshire sandstone. It features a three-stepped hexagonal base topped by a tall plinth, which supports a column adorned with incised shields. At the top, there is a stone urn, and the total height of the monument is 5 metres.
The plinth bears the names of 17 individuals who died in the First World War, along with an inscription that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF THE TOWNSHIP OF NORWOOD GREEN AND COLEY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES AND IN GRATITUDE TO ALL WHO SERVED THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 NAMES OF THE FALLEN (NAMES) AND IN HONOUR OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY 1939-1945."
The memorial was unveiled and dedicated on 11th November 1923 by local dignitaries and clergy. The section of the inscription that refers to the Second World War was likely added after 1945. This memorial serves as a significant tribute to those who fell in both World Wars and is recognized for its thoughtful design and execution.
