Description

The war memorial stands at Westow Street and was erected after the First World War, with later additions commemorating the Second World War. It is a tall pillar constructed from Portland stone, set upon a plinth which itself sits on a stone base. The top of the pillar is adorned with carved decorations in the form of a cross amidst spiral elements. The front face carries the inscription “TO THE / MEMORY / OF THE MEN / OF UPPER / NORWOOD / WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1918 / --- / ALSO / COMMEMORATING / ALL THOSE / WHO DIED IN THE / 1939 - 1945 / WAR.” Below this inscription, on the plinth, is the text: “AS A LASTING MEMORIAL / AN ENDOWMENT FOR THE NORWOOD / COTTAGE HOSPITAL WAS PROVIDED / AND THIS MONUMENT ERECTED.” An eroded inscription, presented in italicized lower case letters, reads "For their country they died / in [illegible] memory they live."
