Description

Christ Church is a church built in 1867 by John Giles, and later extended in 1889. It is constructed of Kentish ragstone in a crazy paving pattern, with freestone dressings. The design is in the French 13th-century Gothic style, characterized by plate tracery and flat buttresses. The original church comprises a nave, aisles, and a short, apsidal chancel. In 1889, a vestry, porch, and a four-stage north-west tower were added. The tower has a short, pyramidal slated spire and angle turrets, with long, paired bell openings. The six-bay nave features polished grey granite columns with foliated capitals, while similar short, attached columns form corbels for the roof and chancel arch. Long red granite shafts support the ribs of the apse. The interior features plastered walls and handsome timber roofs, alongside modern chancel panelling and choir stalls. There is interesting stained glass in the south aisle.
