Description
Upper Rookes is a house dated 1589, although it has been significantly remodeled in the early 20th century. It features finely dressed stone and a stone slate roof. The building has a hall and a cross-wing at the left end, forming an L shape with a three-gabled front consisting of three sections. The doorway in the right section has composite jambs and a lintel inscribed with 'IW 1589' within a shield. All the windows are double chamfered mullioned windows without hoodmoulds. To the right of the doorway is a five-light window with a four-light window above it. The central wall has an eight-light window with a four-light window above, and a parapet connects the two gables, featuring a rainwater chute topped with a carved head. The left wing projects forward and has a five-light window with a four-light window above it. All gables are coped and topped with crocketed finials. The left return wall has two extruded stacks with multiple offsets and a gable between them, which contains two two-light windows on each floor, along with two additional stacks. The rear of the house has been extensively remodeled, but the front retains its original late 16th-century exterior.
