Description
Hill End Farmhouse is a house that dates back to part of the late 15th century, featuring a timber-framed open hall that has been encased in stone. A rear aisle was added in the late 17th century. The exterior is made of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof, and the building has two storeys with a three-room plan. Most windows have been altered. The central section of the house includes a fire window and a spine beam with a scarf joint, which indicates the presence of a former bressumer and firehood. There are three stacks along the ridge. The left-hand return wall features a two-light chamfered mullioned window at the first-floor level. Inside, there are two surviving posts that are braced to the arcade plate and to a king post truss. One of the earlier trusses has a cambered tie beam and a mortice for a post at the front, providing evidence of the earlier timber-framed open hall house. The arcade plate has mortices for a close-studded wall.
