Description

The Bedlington War Memorial is a war memorial designed and sculpted by R Oliver, made of granite and sandstone. It features low stone kerbs and pillars surrounding a short approach with flanking walls and eight stone steps leading up to it. At the top stands a Celtic cross with an inverted torch on the shaft and a stone wreath at its foot. The base of the shaft is inscribed with the words "FOR HOME AND DUTY."

The memorial is mounted on a two-tier pedestal with a stepped base. The upper pedestal displays the names of the fallen in five columns on the front and single columns on either side. The lower pedestal lists names from 1939 to 1945 on the front and sides, along with the inscriptions "THESE FELL IN THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR/1914-1918/REMEMBERED BY DEEDS NOBLY DONE/HEROES EVERYONE" and "THESE FELL IN 1939-1945 IN WORLD WAR II."

Commissioned by the War Memorial Committee, the memorial was unveiled on January 20, 1923, by W. W Burden of Hartford House. It was funded through public subscription, the Bedlington Soldier's and Sailor's fund, and the Bedlingtonshire Urban District Council. The memorial is an attractive and well-executed tribute to those who served in the First World War, with additions for the Second World War, and is listed as Grade II.
