Description
The war memorial located on the village green in Wark was built in 1921 by an unknown architect and sponsor. It is made of sandstone and features a Latin cross with a tapering shaft, which is mounted on a square pedestal with a three-stepped octagonal base. At the base, there are three stone troughs. The front of the pedestal is inscribed with the words: "IN MEMORY/OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/WHO FELL/IN THE GREAT WAR/1914-1918." Both sides of the pedestal list the names of twelve individuals who fell during the First World War, including their rank and regiment. The back of the pedestal includes the date "1939-1945" along with additional names. This memorial, which commemorates those lost in both World Wars, is a notable example of its type and reflects strong local connections to the fallen.
