Description
Park End is a country house that originated in the late 18th century, with flanking wings added around 1830 and further extensions made around 1900. The central block is constructed from dressed stone, while the additions are made of ashlar. The roofs are covered with graduated green slate, and there are dressed stone chimneys.
The house features a central block with wings that are set at right angles, with the right wing projecting further and having a 1900 extension at the rear. The garden front is two stories high, with a three-bay center that includes sash windows and a doorway on the right within raised surrounds. The left wing is notable for its giant angle pilasters, which are rusticated on the ground floor, and has a corniced string between the storeys. It also features a two-story canted bay with replaced sashes set in architraves, topped with an entablature and a deep cornice on brackets.
The right wing is two bays wide and also has giant angle pilasters. It includes a canted ground-floor bay with 12-pane sashes in architraves and a balustraded parapet, along with two sashes above and a wide entablature. The central block has a pitched roof, while the left wing has a hipped roof. The right wing features a steeply-pitched hipped roof with a tripartite dormer that has a pediment over the center light. The building has conjoined, cross-axial ridge stacks with corniced tops, and both wings have three-bay outer returns with similar architectural details.
At the rear, the central block has been re-faced, and a Venetian stair window was added around 1830. The right wing has a three-bay extension in a similar style, and a single-storey canted entrance bay with a distyle Tuscan porch and a balustrated parapet was added around 1900. The interior contains fittings from the late 19th to early 20th centuries.
This building should not be confused with Little Park End.
