Description
The chapel at Chipchase Castle is a Grade I listed building with medieval masonry, largely rebuilt after 1735 for John Reed. The south wall is made of ashlar stone, while the rest is dressed stone, likely remnants of a church that was described as ruinous in the early 18th century. It is a single cell with four bays and features alternating rusticated quoins. The west end has a round-headed doorway with a moulded surround, capitals, and a keystone. There is also a round-headed bellcote at the west end, which has moulded capitals and an arch, as well as a Venetian window on the east side in a similar surround.
The south wall includes round windows with raised unmoulded jambs, arches, and keystones, along with a moulded impost string. The chapel has a gabled roof with coping and kneelers, which at the west end support urns bearing emblems of the Heron family.
Inside, the chapel features similar mouldings around the doors and windows. It contains mid-18th century fittings, including box pews, a reading desk, and choir stalls with fluted pilasters. The pulpit is elaborately carved with a sounding-board that has enriched panelling, Ionic pilasters, and a modillion cornice. The panelling behind the pulpit is flanked by full-height Corinthian pilasters, and the soffit of the sounding board features marquetry of a sun and a relief carving of a dove. The communion rails have turned balusters, and there are several notable 18th and 19th century wall tablets.
