Description

The farmbuildings to the north of Nos. 1, 2, and 3 Townhead Farmhouses are linked structures, currently used for storage and loose-boxes. They were built in the early to mid-19th century and consist of several sections. The buildings are constructed from coursed and squared rubble with purple slate roofs. They form an L-plan layout, with additions that enclose two sides of a yard at the back of the farmhouses. There is an L-plan cart shed located at the rear of the eastern section of the north range, along with a long two-storey building on the west return of the north range.

The north range comprises three linked sections. The central section is a two-storey, five-bay stable featuring a pair of boarded doors, flanked by sashes and casements above. The roof has coped gables, shaped kneelers, and two louvred lanterns on the ridge. To the east is a lower two-storey, five-bay coach house, which includes a segmental coach arch, a horse-mounting block, flanking sashes, boarded doors, and casements above. Its roof has a coped east gable and end stacks. The tall single-storey, three-bay stable on the west has a pair of boarded doors and flanking sashes.

The altered west range also has three linked sections. The central section features a large 20th-century vehicle opening under a gabled canopy. The tall single-storey, two-bay north section has two boarded doors and connects to the west end of the north range. The single-storey, two-bay south section includes a boarded door, a hit-and-miss window, and a roof that is hipped over the south return.

The L-plan cart shed and loose-boxes, which have lofts above, are located at the rear of the north range. This structure is two storeys high, with each arm containing four bays. It features segmental archways on square piers, some of which are blocked, a Dutch door near the re-entrant angle, and hit-and-miss windows above. The roof is hipped over the returns.

On the west return of the north range, there is a long two-storey building made up of two sections. It has two round archways at the west end, a Dutch door, and sashes to the east, along with five hit-and-miss windows above. The roof is hipped over the west return.
