Description
The lych gate to the Church of St. Mungo, dated 1885, was designed by R.J. Johnson in memory of Lancelot J.H. Allgood. It is constructed from ashlar sandstone and features a stone-flagged roof with a square plan. The gate has four gabled faces, each with angle buttresses and double-chamfered pointed arches. The front arch, which is under a hoodmould, has a moulded outer order decorated with nailhead and engaged colonnettes. The gable displays a relief of a cross slab and is inscribed with the following text:
To the Glory of God In memory of Lancelot John Hunter Allgood of Nunwick Esq. This gate is erected by his Kindred, Friends and Tenants A.D. 1885
The gate has a steeply-pitched cross-gabled roof, with stone water spouts that project diagonally at the corners of the eaves. The inner order of the arch facing the churchyard is inscribed in Gothic letters:
TILL THE DAY BREAKS AND THE SHADOWS FLEE AWAY.
The side walls feature moulded coping and stone benches on their inner faces. Inside, there is an octapartite stone vault with chamfered ribs.
