Description
The war memorial located on the village green in Simonburn was built in 1920 by the firm Hart, Son, Peard and Co. Ltd. It is made of stone and features a Celtic cross with a cross head that has Celtic interlace carving. The tall, tapering shaft is mounted on a rectangular plinth, which has an inset rectangular panel on the front face. This panel bears the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND/ IN ABIDING MEMORY OF THOSE MEN/ OF THE PARISH OF SIMONBURN/ WHO FOR HOME AND COUNTRY SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR THIS/CROSS HERE STANDS IN OUR MIDST/ MDCCCCXX." The memorial stands on a three-stepped base.
The memorial was designed and sculpted by Hart, Son, Peard & Co., known for their work in artistic metalwork and their association with the Arts and Crafts movement. It was unveiled on May 30, 1920, by Brigadier General W.H. Allgood, C.M.G., D.S.O., and was dedicated by the Rector of Simonburn. A total of seventy-nine men from the area served in the war, with ten losing their lives and twelve being wounded. This simple yet striking memorial serves as a tribute to those who fought and fell during the First World War.
