Description

The Town Hall, formerly known as the Mechanics' Institute, was built in 1873. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a Welsh slate roof topped with a wooden cupola. The building is two storeys high and has three bays. It has rusticated quoins and a central doorway that is highlighted by a prominent cornice supported by stone brackets. Above the doorway is a window with a flat surround and a projecting sill supported by corbels, flanked by two-light windows that have similar surrounds. The central bay is accentuated by giant pilasters with ornamental capitals, a plain top frieze, and a moulded cornice. A low parapet rises above the central bay, creating an elaborate frame for the clock and the inscription "WARK MECHANICS INSTITUTE." The clock is flanked by ball finials and topped with an acroterion. The roof is hipped, while the cupola features a pyramidal roof on moulded corbels, with elliptical-arched sides adorned with scalloped slats. The building is included in the heritage register mainly for its historical interest.
