Description
The Mechanics Institute is a mid-19th century building located on Meltham Road. The ground floor is constructed of ashlar stone, while the first floor features hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings. The sides are also made of hammer-dressed stone, and the building has a hipped stone slate roof. It stands two storeys tall and is characterized by a deep moulded eaves cornice supported by brackets. A frieze displays the words "Mechanics' Institute" in large sans-serif lettering. There is a continuous sill band at the first floor level and a moulded cornice above the ground floor, which is horizontally rusticated. The building has three ranges of windows; the first-floor windows are round-arched with moulded voussoirs and keystones. The entrance features double doors with moulded panels and a fanlight, framed by a surround that includes four Doric three-quarter columns, a full entablature, and a blocking course.
