Description

The Former City Museum, built between 1820 and 1821, is a Grade II* listed building made of sandstone ashlar. It features two tall storeys and five bays. The structure has a plinth and a rusticated ground floor that leads to a first-floor band, supported by paired Ionic angle pilasters and half-columns that divide the bays. These elements support an entablature beneath a hipped roof covered in graduated Welsh slate. The building originally had sash windows with glazing bars, although most have been replaced. The first-floor windows are set in narrow architraves with cornices and apron panels. The frieze includes incised letters that read "MECHANICS' INSTITUTION." A modern central doorway has been added. The returns of the building have three grouped windows on each floor, framed in Ionic orders.

The rear elevation facing Tammy Hall Street is stuccoed in a Regency style and consists of two storeys and a basement, with a low mezzanine featuring blank window panels. The windows are arranged in a 3:3:3 pattern, with the central windows in a round bow shape. The sash windows, mostly replaced, have glazing bars and are curved in the bows. There is another bow at the south end of the building. The area is enclosed by wrought iron spearhead railings with urn finials at intervals.
