Description
57 Northgate is a shop with accommodation above and a former warehouse at the rear, which is now also a shop. The building dates from the 16th century, early 18th century, early 19th century, and 20th century. It features a timber frame, red brick, and rock-faced ashlar with render, topped by slate roofs and brick gable and ridge stacks. The east front has a 20th-century shop front with a central doorway, above which are two 20th-century casements, and above those are two smaller 20th-century casements. The rear front facing Gill's Yard is two stories high, rendered, with brick bands and irregular fenestration, mostly from the 20th century. Inside No 57, there are remains of a late medieval timber-framed building, including a single close-studded wall and extensive wall plate. The rear section facing Gill's Yard was used as a furniture and upholstery warehouse by Wright and Elwick of Wakefield, notable Yorkshire furniture makers.
