Description
This well, located approximately 5 meters to the north-west of Number 190 (Porter Lodge) in Sowerby Bridge, is dated 1749 but is likely from the 19th century. It is constructed from coursed squared stone and ashlar. The well features a punch-dressed trough that is fed by a spout projecting from an arched niche, which is formed from a single piece of stone. This niche includes voussoirs that are incised, a dated keystone, a pulvinated frieze, and a cyma-moulded cornice. The lettering on the well matches that found on the Orangery at Field House, suggesting both structures may belong to the 19th century. The lodges to the east of the well are marked as '1749 rebuilt 1874', indicating that the well may also have undergone rebuilding.
