Description
Netherton Well is a well-head with retaining walls dating from the 19th century. It is constructed from coursed squared stone. The well is set in a recess of a curved retaining wall, which is flanked by a paved area and a low roadside wall. The tall rear retaining wall features a higher central section, with slightly recessed quadrant walls that slope down towards the road. The well recess, located at a low level in the center, has a monolithic sill and lintel, along with a later engraved stone notice warning against damage positioned above it. The structure is topped with flat stone coping and pyramidal end-stones. In front, there is a partially-paved area and a low roadside wall with chamfered coping. This watering point was an important feature along the Lockwood to Meltham Road when it was turnpiked by Act of Parliament in 1818.
