Description

Clayton Village Hall, built around 1870, was originally a Mechanics Institute. It features a dignified Italianate design with a pedimented central break. The building is constructed from graded sandstone "bricks" and has rusticated quoin pilasters. Ground floor windows are adorned with an impost string that links the archivolt arches, while a moulded sill course runs along the first floor. The central first floor window has a pulvinated frieze and a moulded cornice above it. A moulded main cornice and parapet are present, with sections of interlaced balustrading and spiked ball finials crowning the parapet. The entrance is highlighted by a pilastered doorway that includes a pulvinated frieze and a moulded cornice.
