Description
The Church of St John the Baptist was built between 1849 and 1850 and designed by the architectural firm Mallinson and Healey. It features an ashlar-faced exterior with a tall nave that includes a clerestory, low aisles, transepts, and a chancel. At the west end, there is a square tower with clasping buttresses. The windows exhibit reticulated and panel tracery, complete with drip moulds. The tower has two-light belfry openings and is topped with crenellated parapets. The church also boasts large reticulated west windows on the gable ends of the aisles. Its prominent location and distinctive tower make St John's a key feature of the town's skyline.
