Description
Nos 1 to 9 South Square, located in Thornton, were built in 1832 and are part of a small cul-de-sac on the south side of Thornton Road. These two-storey sandstone cottages rise to three storeys on the south front and feature slightly more formal three-bay fronts facing Thornton Road, specifically at Nos 377 and 379. The buildings have stone slate roofs that are hipped over the fronts on Thornton Road, and they are topped with corniced chimneys. The stone eaves are adorned with spaced dentil brackets. The windows are single and two-light square mullions set in squared surrounds, while the doorways have squared jambs. Nos 377 and 379 on Thornton Road have three-bay fronts with console corniced doorways that are similar to and balance those of Nos 381 and 383.
