Description
Nos 379A and 381 Thornton Road are part of an early 19th-century row of cottages that step down a hill, increasing in height from two to three storeys due to the slope. They are back to back with Nos 2 to 10 (even) Friendly Street and are part of the same development that includes South Square, which is dated 1832. The cottages are built of sandstone "brick" with a stone slate roof and feature corniced chimneys. The windows are single and two-light square mullion types set in squared surrounds, and the doorways have squared jambs. The former No 1 shares its south gable end return with No 2 Friendly Street. The hipped roof end facing Thornton Road (No 381) has two former two-bay fronts with console corniced doorways, balancing with No 373 Thornton Road at the corner of South Square. These buildings are included for their group value.
