Description
Nos 2-18 George Street in Saltaire is a terrace of overlookers' houses completed by 1868, designed by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt. The buildings are constructed from hammer-dressed stone and feature a Welsh slate roof. Nos 7-12 and 18 are three stories tall, while the others are two stories. Each house has two bays, with Nos 7, 12, 18, and 49 projecting forward and featuring gabled roofs. The entrances have fanlights set in stepped reveals, and the ground-floor windows are round-arched with keystones and archivolts, complemented by sunk panels below the sills. The first-floor windows are square-headed, and No. 49 has a distinctive two-light round-arched window with a central colonnette. The tympanum above features a blind oculus and alternately coloured voussoirs with a hood in the Venetian Gothic style. The doorway of No. 49 is partially blocked. The buildings have shaped brackets for the gutters and long brackets at the gables, with broad stone stacks that have cornices, some of which are rendered. The right return elevation of No. 49 has a recent Building Society frontage. This terrace is part of the Saltaire model village.
