Description

This is a terrace of overlookers’ houses and shops, likely completed around 1861, built by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt as part of the Saltaire model village. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof. The central two houses and the right-hand block project slightly and are three stories high, while the remaining houses are two stories. Each house has two bays. Ground-floor entrances have deep fanlights, and the ground-floor windows are accentuated by cornices supported on long brackets. Upper-floor windows are simple and sit on sill bands. Nos. 73 and 74 have more recent bow windows. Large wooden brackets support the gutter line. The chimneys have cornices. The roofs are hipped. The left return elevation, facing Saltaire Road (Nos. 101, 103, and 105), incorporates shop fronts with original stone jambs and cornices, as well as square-headed first-floor windows. Gabled dormers break through the eaves of Nos. 101 and 103, creating an attic storey. The right return of No. 66 has two bays, and a further two bays belong to No. 47. The leftmost bay of No. 47 is a square tower with a ground-floor entrance and a third storey featuring two round-arched lights on each side. A tall staircase window is located on the right return of No. 47. The building is included on the list for its group value as part of the wider Saltaire estate.
