Description
This is a terrace of overlookers' houses, likely completed around 1861, built by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt as part of the Saltaire model village. The buildings are constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof. The ends of the terrace, numbers 20 and 48, project slightly forward, while numbers 19 and 49 project at the rear. The houses are arranged symmetrically, with a central grouping and these projecting end features. The end blocks are three storeys high, while the others are two storeys. Each house has two bays. The entrances feature deep fanlights, and the ground floor windows are topped with cornices resting on long brackets. The first and second floor windows are plain and have sill bands. Moulded stone brackets support the guttering. The buildings have broad stacks with cornices and hipped roofs. The left return displays entrances to numbers 48 and 49, with details mirroring the front elevation. A large shop window at number 48 has since been blocked. The right return features entrances to numbers 19 and 20, similarly detailed, though number 19 now has a recent porch. Original sash windows remain in number 20. The buildings are included on the list for their group value and contribution to the wider Saltaire context.
