Description

This is a terrace of four overlookers' houses and an attached arcade, completed in 1868 as part of the Saltaire model village. The buildings were designed by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt. They are constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof. The terrace comprises two pairs of houses, each with three bays, arranged symmetrically. The end houses project slightly forward. The entrances have rectangular fanlights, and the ground-floor windows feature sunk panels below the sills, topped by cornices supported on long brackets. The first-floor windows are plain. A decorative band runs between the ground and first floors. Number 72 retains its original sash windows with glazing bars. The roof is hipped with moulded stone brackets supporting the gutter. Stone stacks have cornices. The right return has two similar bays and an arcade connecting the block to No. 10 Titus Street, providing access to a rear road. The left return has two similar bays, two gabled attic dormers that break the eaves, and an arcade joining the block to No. 10 Mawson Street. The building is included on the list for its group value within the wider context of Saltaire.
