Description

This building comprises a group of shop premises, completed by 1868 by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt, as part of the Saltaire model village. It is constructed of hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate roof. The design is Italianate in style, with two storeys and a 9-bay facade, the central 5 bays projecting slightly and topped with a parapet. No. 12 occupies a corner site, featuring a rounded corner bay. The facade is framed by rusticated ashlar quoins and a deep entablature between the floors. The ground floor contains shop fronts, some of which have been altered recently. The first floor has round-arched, archivolted windows with original sashes and glazing bars, with a blind centre light. Deep, bracketed eaves and a hipped roof are also present. Broad, rendered stacks with cornices rise from the building. The side elevations are similar, with 3 bays to the left and 2 bays to the right, also topped with a parapet.
