Description

Numbers 76, 77, 78 and the attached arcade are improved overlookers' houses completed by 1868. They were designed by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt. The buildings are constructed from hammer-dressed stone and feature a Welsh slate roof. Each house is two storeys high and consists of two bays, with No 76 slightly projecting forward. The entrances have rectangular fanlights, and the windows, which have sunk panels below the sills, all feature cornices supported by long shaped brackets. The first-floor windows are square-headed, and there is a band between the floors. Moulded stone brackets support the gutter, and the hipped roof is topped with two tall stacks that have cornices. The right return of the building mirrors the front with its two bays. Attached to the right is a two-bay arcade that connects the block to No 10 Lockwood Street and provides access to the rear road. This group of buildings is included for its group value and is part of the Saltaire model village.
