Description

This is a terrace of six executive or “overlookers’” houses built by 1868 as part of the Saltaire model village, designed by Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt. The houses are constructed of hammer-dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof. Each house is originally two bays wide, although No. 1 is set back and Nos. 2 and 6 project slightly. All entrances have fanlights, and the ground-floor windows have cornices supported by long brackets, with sunk panels below the sills. The first-floor windows are plain. A decorative band runs between the floors, and stone brackets support the guttering. The roofs are hipped, with stone stacks featuring cornices. The right gable of No. 1 has a three-light canted bay window to the ground floor, with a cornice and blocking course, and paired round-arched windows with a central colonnette to the first floor. Bracketed gable copings cap each house. The buildings are listed for their group value as part of the wider Saltaire estate.
