Description
This is a terrace of twelve buildings, numbered 2 to 16 Springfield Street, Thornton, dating to approximately 1810 to 1820. The buildings terrace up a hill, decreasing in height from four storeys at No. 2, which stands on the corner with Market Street, to two storeys and a basement at No. 16, although No. 16 is stepped up the slope. A low stone wall with plain iron railings runs along the front. A platband separates the floors. The roofs are stone slate, with hipped ends, and the chimneys have cornices. Stone guttering is detailed with dentil brackets. The windows are square mullion windows, with single or two lights, set in squared stone surrounds. Doorways have squared stone jambs. The return front of No. 2, facing Market Street, features a small shop front and square mullion windows on the upper floors. A rainwater head and downpipe are dated 1819.
