Description

10-13 Britannia Square is a terrace of four houses built around 1820, with later additions and alterations. The houses are finished in painted stucco over brick, featuring a concealed slate roof and four brick stacks with oversailing courses and pots, partially hidden at the ends of the pediment. The ground floor has timber bays, and the design gives the appearance of one large house, although all entrances are located on the facade. The terrace stands three storeys high, with a basement and attics.

The first floor has eight windows arranged in pairs, with stucco detailing that includes pilasters beside each pair of windows, rising from a first-floor sill band to a frieze, a moulded cornice, and a coped parapet. The two central houses project slightly and are topped with a pediment that has three recessed panels in the tympanum. The entrances feature moulded architraves and sills, with stucco scored to resemble ashlar. The first-floor windows are 6/6 sashes, while the second floor has 3/6 sashes, all set in plain reveals with sills. There are also two small 4/4 attic windows in the tympanum. The ground floor has four flat-roofed canted bays with moulded architraves and 2/1, 8/3, and 2/1 sashes. Access to the entrance is via three roll-edged stone steps, leading to four-panel doors; the lower pair is flush-beaded, while the upper pair is raised and fielded with bolection moulding, complemented by radial pattern fanlights. At the rear, there are two-storey service ranges.

The listed buildings in Britannia Square form a cohesive group, initiated in 1820 and arranged around a large green where the main house, Springfield, is situated. This development is comparable to similar, albeit smaller, projects in Worcester, such as Lansdowne Crescent, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace.
