Description

6 and 7 Britannia Square are two semi-detached houses built around 1820, with later additions and alterations. They are constructed of painted stucco over brick and feature a slate roof with coped curvilinear parapeted gables. The houses have end, party wall, and rear brick stacks, all with oversailing details, except for the center stack which has a string course at about half-height, all topped with pots. The buildings are arranged in a double-depth T-plan with entrances on the return elevations. They rise to three storeys with a cellar and have four first-floor windows arranged in a 2:2 pattern.

Architectural details include stucco sills and lining that mimic ashlar on the main elevation. The entrance porches feature a plinth, a moulded architrave to a semi-circular arch, recessed panels in the spandrels, a cornice, and a curvilinear coped parapet topped with a ball finial. The first-floor windows are 8/8 sashes, the second-floor windows are 4/4, and the ground-floor windows are 8/12, all set in plain reveals with sills. The single-storey entrance porches are set back on the return elevations. The door to the left-hand house, located within an archway, is a six-panel door with the bottom pair flush-beaded and the rest raised and fielded, though the fanlight has been altered. The right-hand porch has an open archway with the door located in the return elevation of the main house; this door is half-glazed with four panes and has the bottom pair of panels flush-beaded. The porch features a stone-flagged floor, and the rear and side walls have blind arched recesses.

All the listed buildings in Britannia Square form a cohesive group, initiated in 1820 and designed around a large green where the main house, 'Springfield', is situated. This development is comparable to similar, albeit smaller, projects in Worcester, such as Lansdowne Crescent, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace.
