Description

No. 2 Britannia Square is a house built around 1820, with later additions and alterations. It features painted stucco over brick and has a hipped slate roof, with altered brick end stacks and pots, as well as end and ridge brick stacks on the rear range. The house has a double-depth plan with a central entrance and hallway, and it stands two storeys tall with three first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes a moulded architrave around the entrance and sills, with the stucco scored to resemble ashlar. The windows are sash style, with 8/8 panes except for the centre first-floor window, which has 6/6 panes; all are set in plain reveals with sills. The entrance door has five panels, with the bottom pair being flush double beaded, the centre panel raised and fielded, and the upper pair glazed, topped with a fanlight.

At the rear, there is a two-storey range with its ridge running parallel to the front range, and the roof is hipped at the left end. This rear range is offset to the right and connected to the right return of the front range by a single-storey flat-roofed infill, accessed through a two-panel door. The left return is plain brick, while the right return is painted brick. The rear elevation features 3/2 and 2/2 sash windows.

All the listed buildings in Britannia Square form a cohesive group, initiated in 1820 and designed around a large green where the main house, 'Springfield', is located. This development is comparable to similar, albeit smaller, projects in Worcester, such as Lansdowne Crescent, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace.
