Description
24 and 25 The Tything is a mid-18th century house at the end of a terrace, now divided into a shop and offices. The building features a refronting of an earlier property, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings, and has stucco on the return. The plain clay tile roof is behind a parapet, and there is a large brick stack at the rear left with oversailing courses and pots. The entrance is marked by a timber doorcase.
The building has a single-depth plan and stands three storeys tall. The first floor has five windows arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern. Stone detailing includes a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course, with capped keystones and sills for the windows. There are steps leading to the entrance, which features a renewed six-panel door with Gothic-style tracery in the anlight and an open pediment doorcase.
To the left of the entrance is a late 19th-century timber shopfront with a recessed entrance on the right. To the right of the entrance is another 19th-century timber shopfront that includes pilasters, console brackets, a fascia, a cornice, and turned mullions, with a corner entrance that is canted and set back behind a cast-iron column. The right return of the building is stucco under an asymmetric roof pitch, and there is a two-storey rear wing with two first-floor windows, both featuring 6/6 flush-fitted sashes. The shopfront continues from the facade with an additional matching shop window to the right, and there is another wing at the rear left. The interior has not been inspected.
