Description

16 and 17 Britannia Square are two semi-detached houses built around 1820, with later additions and alterations. They feature painted stucco over brick and have a hipped slate roof, with a party wall stack on both the front and rear slopes, topped with oversailing courses and pots. The houses have canted timber bays with dentilated and bracketed eaves, and a timber-framed conservatory on the left return. The design includes a double-depth plan with entrances in two-storey wings that are set back on the left and right return elevations. The buildings rise to three storeys and have two first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes window sills, and the mid-19th century canted bays have flat roofs with window arrangements of 1/1:2/2:1/1. The second-floor windows are 6/6 sashes, while the first-floor wings have 3/3 sashes. The left-hand house has a three-panel door with an upper glazed panel and a flush-beaded bottom pair, along with a French window in the return wall, both accessed through the lean-to conservatory. The right-hand house has a similar three-panel door, but with a raised and fielded upper panel and plain semi-elliptical fanlights. The return elevations and wings are made of unpainted brick.

Inside the right-hand house, some original features remain, including panelled doors, architraves, picture rails, a staircase with winders and square balusters, and fireplaces on the second floor. The left house was not inspected.

Historically, a glazed structure is shown on the left-hand house in the 1886 Ordnance Survey map. The listed buildings in Britannia Square form a cohesive group, initiated in 1820 and arranged around a large green where the main house, 'Springfield', is located. This development is comparable to similar, albeit smaller, projects in Worcester, such as Lansdowne Crescent, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace.
