Description
23 and 24 Britannia Square are two semi-detached houses built around 1820, with later additions and alterations. They feature painted stucco over brick and a hipped slate roof, with partially renewed end stacks that have brick oversailing detail and pots. A cast-iron balustrade adorns the porch, which has double-depth plans and adjoining central entrance doors within a shared porch. The houses are two storeys tall and have three first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes a plinth, raised chamfered quoins, and matching rustication around the door surrounds, along with square columns supporting the porch. All windows are sash, with eight panes over eight panes, except for the central first-floor window, which has a pair of four panes over four panes with a central mullion. All windows are set in plain reveals with sills. The entrance doors are five-panel with overlights, situated within a Doric-style porch supported by three columns. The porch features an ornamental cast-iron balustrade in a scroll design and has three tapered, roll-edged stone steps on each side.
The listed buildings in Britannia Square form a cohesive group, initiated in 1820 and designed around a large green, with the main house, 'Springfield', at its center. They are comparable to other similar, though smaller, developments in Worcester, such as Lansdowne Crescent, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace.
