Description
Nos 25 and 26 are two semi-detached houses, with No. 25 converted into two flats, and an attached wall to the left house. They were built around 1820 and have undergone later additions and alterations. The houses feature painted stucco over brick and have a hipped slate roof that is concealed behind a parapet. There is a central brick chimney stack with oversailing detail and pots. The attached walls are also stucco over brick. The buildings have a double-depth plan with two-storey wings that are set well back from the return elevations.
The houses are two storeys high and have four first-floor windows arranged in a 1:2:1 pattern. The stucco detailing includes a plinth, Doric-style pilasters at the ends and center, and a plain eaves band with a moulded top edge. All the windows are sash style, with 8/8 panes except for the side wings, which have 6/6 panes. The windows are set in plain reveals with sills. The entrance doors, located in the return elevations, are five-panel doors with the upper three panels raised and fielded, while the bottom panels are flush. The fanlights above the doors have radial glazing bars, and there are two roll-edged stone steps leading to the entrances.
The subsidiary features include enclosing walls at the entrance of No. 25, which are accessed through an open semi-circular headed doorway in the east wall. These walls are approximately 3 meters high and topped with coping.
All the listed buildings in Britannia Square form a cohesive group that was initiated in 1820 and designed around a large green area where the main house, 'Springfield', is located. This development is comparable to similar, albeit smaller, projects in Worcester, such as Lansdowne Crescent, Lark Hill, and Rainbow Hill Terrace.
