Description

Kipping Independent Chapel is a building that was rebuilt in 1843, replacing an 18th-century chapel that served as the original meeting house, which was chartered by Charles II in 1672. The chapel has a rectangular plan and features a two-storey front made of dressed sandstone "brick" with ashlar dressings, showcasing simplified Greek Revival details. The façade has three bays, with the center bay slightly projecting forward. It is adorned with broad quoin pilasters, a plinth, a plat band, a bed mould to the frieze, and a projecting cornice that is broken over the quoin pilasters. The roof is hipped and covered with slate.

The outer first-floor windows are framed with battered eared architrave surrounds, while the central window is tripartite, flanked by pilasters and topped with an entablature. A dated plaque is set below this window. On the ground floor, there are two-light pilastered windows with entablatures, and a large central porch that projects slightly. The porch features Doric pilasters with rosettes at the necking, a deep frieze cornice, and a blocking course. The entrance has large double doors with horizontal moulded panels. The side elevations are plain and two-storey. Inside, the chapel has a galleried interior, with furnishings that are partly from the later 19th century.
