Description

This is a house, built in 1802. From 1815 to 1820, it was the home of the Brontë family, and the birthplace of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë. A projecting shop was added around the middle of the 19th century, creating number 72.

The house is built of thin coursed sandstone, dressed with sandstone, and has a stone slate roof. It is a small, two-storey, three-bay house attached to properties on either side. The symmetrical front has large, square windows divided into paired lights with central stone mullions; the window above the central door is a single light. These windows have plain stone surrounds and 2-over-2 sashes. The central door also has a plain stone surround, and a moulded cornice supported by simple console brackets. The eaves are corniced, supported by small, paired modillion brackets.

The mid-19th century projecting bay is canted to the west and includes a doorway set in the corner. A large shop window faces the street to the south, featuring a 3-over-3 sash and a folding awning, all beneath a moulded stone cornice supported by moulded consoles.

The interior has not been inspected.

To the left (west) of the front door, a low wall topped with short, wrought iron railings featuring fleur de lis and honeysuckle motifs encloses a small front garden.
