Description
Nos 285 and 287 on Thornton Road, dated 1831, are a pair of houses linked to Prospect Mill. They may be adaptations of an earlier mill building. The front of the houses is symmetrical, featuring five bays and two doorways in the center. The exterior is made of painted sandstone that resembles brick, and the buildings are two stories tall at the front and three stories at the rear. The roof is covered with stone slates and has corniced chimneys along with a moulded eaves cornice. The 19th-century sash windows have plain squared surrounds, and the doorways are framed with architrave surrounds that include corner blocks. The frieze above the doorway of No 287 displays the date and incised ornamentation. There are projecting cornices above the doorways, and the three-story rear elevation includes stair turrets with narrow round-headed lights.
