Description
Ashfield House is a substantial villa built around 1850-1860 for the Craven family, who owned Prospect Mill. Constructed from sandstone ashlar, the house features slight Italianate details. It is two storeys tall with rusticated quoins and has a plinth and console brackets supporting the moulded eaves cornice. The hipped slate roof is topped with corniced chimneys.
The east entrance front has three bays, with windows framed in architrave surrounds and cornices on console brackets. The central first-floor window is adorned with a pediment. A Tuscan column porch with a deep entablature leads to a panelled door topped by a radial glazed fanlight. The south garden front has four bays, with the left bay projecting forward and featuring rusticated quoins. The fenestration is similar, but the projection includes tripartite windows with cornices and pilasters dividing and flanking the lights on the ground floor, along with sill bands.
Inside, the house boasts rich plasterwork and mouldings on the doorcases, including an anthemion pattern. The staircase features a stained glass two-light arched stair window, and the hall floor is laid with good polychrome encaustic tiles. Ashfield House is prominently situated on a hillside with terraced grounds.
