Description
This is a milepost located approximately 30 metres north of the entrance to Hatfield Manor House, dating from the late 19th century. It was made by Brayshaw and Booth of Liversedge. The milepost features a cast-iron plaque mounted on a stone pillar. The plaque has a flat, round-headed shape with a panel at the top and two additional panels below. The raised lettering on the upper panel reads "DONCASTER & THORNE / ROAD / HATFIELD." The left panel indicates "DONCASTER / 7 MILES," which also includes the maker's name, while the right panel states "THORNE / 3 3/4 MILES." This milepost is an unusual example from this foundry, which supplied mileposts to turnpikes throughout the West Riding.
