Description
Number 13 (The Shambles) and Number 15 is a house with an attached wing wall that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates from the late 18th century and is constructed of brindled brick in Flemish bond with a Welsh slate roof. The building is two storeys high and features a layout of 1:3:1 bays, with the attached wing wall on the left side masking an outshut against the left return.
There is a brick plinth, and the central bays project forward. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door with a three-pane overlight set beneath a flat arch. The other bays have sash windows with glazing bars, also featuring similar arches. On the first floor, there is a band beneath similar windows, with the central window being blind. A dentilled eaves course runs across the building and over a central three-bay pediment that has ashlar copings. The roof is hipped, with brick ridge stacks flanking the pediment.
The attached wing wall on the left projects forward before returning at a corner pilaster to conceal the much-altered outshut, which forms part of The Shambles. This building is also known as 'the Court House' as it served as the Manorial Court for Hatfield.
