Description
Chawton Glebe and Rectory Cottage is a house that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates from the 18th century, with early and late 19th-century alterations. The building features painted brickwork in Flemish bond, with rubbed flat arches and a plinth. On the north side, there is a half-octagonal, two-storey bay. The roof is hipped and covered with slate, featuring wide eaves supported by coupled carved brackets against a plain fascia, while the bay has a flat roof. The original double pile valley has been modified to create a Mansard appearance.
The house has an almost square shape, with a lower rear wing that is likely older. The east elevation, which was once symmetrical, has two storeys with a total of five windows: three above two. The windows are now 20th-century casements, which were originally sash windows set in reveals. The south elevation also has two storeys and a similar window arrangement, featuring a solid Tuscan porch with pilasters, two bays, a sash window, and a panelled door. The north side extends into the two-storey wing, which has three windows, including sashes and an upper oriel window dating from around 1900. The other elevations are irregular but include a staircase window with Gothic lights.
Inside, the property retains its original staircase, panelled doors with architraves, and some ceiling cornices.
