Description
The monument to Cassandra Austen and Cassandra Elizabeth Austen is located south of the Church of St Nicholas in Chawton. It consists of a pair of headstones with footstones, dating from 1827 and 1845. The headstones are made of limestone and feature shaped heads with inscriptions in upper case letters that have serifs and elaborate initial letters. The smaller footstones are segmental headed and bear the initials C.A. and C.E.A. The monument is set on a paved base and marks the graves of Cassandra Austen, who was the mother of Jane Austen and lived from 1739 to 1827, and Cassandra Elizabeth Austen, Jane Austen's elder sister, who lived from 1773 to 1845.
