Description

This milestone, located approximately 200 metres west of the junction with Coach Gate, dates from the mid to late 19th century. It is a stone post with a cast-iron triangular front and a round head. The raised letters on the milestone indicate distances to various locations: Barnsley and Shepley, Lane Head, Cawthorne, Denby Dale, Holmfirth, and Barnsley. The Shepley Roads Turnpike Trust was formed in 1825, and the road was completed in 1845, with the trust being abolished in 1875.
