Description
Upper House Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the 17th century, with later additions from the 18th or 19th century at the rear, which faces the road. The building is constructed from thinly coursed rubble and features quoins, topped with a stone slate roof. It has a rectangular plan made up of two parallel ranges, with the roof linked in an H-plan style.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and originally had attics, comprising three bays. The front is symmetrical, featuring double-chamfered windows with hoodmoulds. There is a central doorway that is now partially blocked, surrounded by a quoined, chamfered frame. To the left and right of the doorway are transomed windows with four over four lights. The first floor has 4-light windows flanking a central 2-light window, all under a common hoodmould. There are also two blocked attic windows. The gable copings are hollow-chamfered and rest on moulded kneelers, with apex finials, although those at the verges are missing. A 19th-century ornamental central brick stack is present, along with an ashlar lateral stack on the left side.
The rear elevation is thought to have originally mirrored the front, but the central and left sections are now partially obscured by a two-storey addition, which is believed to have been a granary. This addition features a later first-floor doorway accessed by stone steps in its gable. The right side of the house retains some altered mullioned windows and additional later openings, while the left side has been rebuilt. The interior has not been inspected.
