Description

Jowett Saw Mill is a house that was originally a corn mill and later converted into a saw mill. It dates from the early to mid 19th century, with a water wheel installed in 1854 and the main part of the building added in 1858. The building underwent restoration in the 20th century. It is constructed of coursed squared stone, with the 1858 section featuring a pitch-faced finish while the rear is rendered and includes a brick wing. The roof is made of stone slate.

The structure consists of a two-storey early block and a single-storey section with an attic and dormers. The L-shaped 1858 range has the earlier block protruding at the right end. The early block features a front with two bays of two-light gothic arched windows and an ornamental ashlar stack at the right end. There is a round-arched opening at the rear leading into the wheel house, and the left gable has a large low-level doorway supported by corbels, with a first-floor doorway above it.

The 1858 range is designed in a Tudor style, with rock-faced quoins at the corners, bay divisions, and window and door openings. The main range has six bays, with the third and fifth bays being plain, while the second, fourth, and sixth bays are slightly set back. Bays one and four have two-light windows with round-arched lights, and there are round-arched door openings in bays two and six, the latter now glazed. The building features excellent square twisted stacks with triple flues on the left and a single flue in the center. The left return gable has two bays of two-light windows similar to the front, along with a tablet inscribed in raised letters reading "AD MDCCCLVI."

The interior of the early block includes the wheel house, which houses a breast shot wheel approximately four meters in diameter and two meters wide, featuring cast-iron sides and wooden paddles.
